President John Dramani Mahama says his government has encouraged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to ensure that payments due to the players are processed as quickly as possible to avoid what happened in Brazil as the Black Stars prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In an interview with Sporty FM in Accra on Monday, the President admitted that the country’s image was dented when it airlifted cash to Brazil to pay players their appearance fee.
“Brazil 2014 dented Ghana’s reputation, but that is all behind us now, so we’ve encouraged the GFA to ensure that payments due to the players are processed as quickly as possible. To ensure Brazil doesn’t happen again, there must be discipline and transparency.” President Mahama said.
The President revealed that both the government and the GFA are working hand-in-hand to ensure transparency and accountability to avoid the 2014 fiasco that took center stage during his tenure.
“We believe this campaign should be more disciplined and transparent. Often when decisions are made and funding is opaque, it creates all kinds of rumours and misconceptions in society, and so discipline and transparency are the two watch words in terms of the next campaign we’re going into”he added.
